The Pittsburgh Steelers play home games at Heinz Field. It is one of the coolest NFL stadiums out there so if you haven’t made it out you owe it to yourself to get there. Heinz Field opened in 2001, and it is named for the H.J. Heinz Company.
Heinz Field is located on the banks of the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh’s North Side. With Pittsburgh’s Steel history in mind, the Heinz Field contains 12,000 tons of steel. The first Steeler football game at Heinz Field took place in September of 2001.
The Steelers Stadium is now made of Desso GrassMaster, a natural grass that is enhanced by synthetic grass. The original playing surface was Kentucky Bluegrass. The surface has been the topic of many debates, as some wanted the surface to be changed to a synthetic surface. Players and coaches from around the league lobbied for the natural grass to stay, and it is there to this day. The real grass is one more reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers history is so impressive. The team is defined by grit, and I personally am glad ownership hasn’t given into the pressure. Here’s a quote from Ike Taylor that sums up the argument for natural grass: “I need the grass. I like the mud. I like the sloppiness, I’m used to it. Mr. Rooney, can we please keep the grass? I don’t want no FieldTurf.”
The stadium replaced Three Rivers Stadium which hosted the Steelers for 31 seasons.
